The Cars - Touch and Go - ABC's "Fridays"

Uploaded by: morrisonAV

Video Description:
Ric Ocasek and crew on ABC's answer to "Saturday Night Live". This was first broadcast Sept. 19, 1980 but I believe that I recorded this a few months later when the show was repeated.

Yeah, the band was ... ( 1 month ago by therealjdc)
Yeah, the band was actually moving, that was weird! I've always had a kind of unofficial theory that Panorama was influenced by cocaine. The songs are faster, more aggressive, more intellectual than emotional, and I just get that vibe off of it. Can't prove it, of course, just a notion. . . .

They were, they were a rock band and a damn good one.
You mention The Cars nowadays, and people think of the distinctive MTV videos, and the clothing styles, and Paulina, and the music just gets overlooked. There's a perception that because they used technology, they weren't actually PLAYING . . . but if it were easy, a million other bands would have jumped in after The Cars broke up in 1987. They were fine musicians and a very tight band!

I think you have a point about "Spirits in the Material World". Tom Petty's "You Got Lucky" also has a similar keyboard part. They all start on that cluster of B and C right next to each other, then switch to A and C. Who knows, though, "great minds think alike" and all that . . . .

The funny thing is, I know Hendrix, Vaughn, and Page were genuinely great guitarists, but after having them pushed in my face by the rock media all my life, I don't care. I'm even starting to get burned out on David Gilmour, just from reading so many frickin' articles about how wonderful everybody says he is.
I especially hate Rolling Stone magazine, and for them to promote something is a sure way to make me not like it.

No, that isn't true, sorry. I don't think any of them are from Carlisle. Ben was from Ohio, Ric was from Maryland, and they formed in Boston.
They picked the name "The Cars" quite sensibly, because it allowed journalists to write headlines like "Cars shift into high gear with latest album", which they proceeded to do for the duration of the band's career.

Because the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a bunch of nonsense, and Jann Wenner specifically is a self-important blowhard jackass.

Heh, I always wondered if Ben was a stoner. I used to have a tape of the original broadcast of Live Aid, and Martha Quinn did an interview with Ben after their set, and he was either very stoned or just flat-out drunk.

Since you mentioned Van Halen, I think the solo in "Candy-O" (the song) uses that two-handed tapping technique Van Halen popularized (but did not invent).

I've never noticed a problem with Greg's technical proficiency. He just doesn't do extravagant solos like some "progressive" keyboardists did.
I think his talent was developing multiple interacting melody lines that went on top of each other. I have his solo album Niagara Falls, and it's good listening, like Cars songs without vocals.
Here he's playing in 4/4 time on the off-beats (one-AND-two-AND-three-AND-four-AND...) while the drums play in 5/4. Not easy.

I agree with your post. I loved playing this song back when I was in bar bands in the 80s, but learning that bass part was a trip.
All of Elliot Easton's solos are works of art. I find it hard to believe how underrated he is.
As for the style, that was the drummer David Robinson's idea. I read that he had a degree in art and was in charge of all things visual with the Cars, from the Vargas cover on Candy-O to the color schemes on stage to even picking out clothing for the band to wear.
Yeah good point. ... ( 1 month ago by hectorsalinasisback)
Yeah good point. There was a UK band who toured with The Cars called The Records, Ben Orr alludes to them in the YouTube final interview/Cars reunion before he died. The Records' guitarists were John Wicks and Huw Gower. Gower is left handed and similar to Elliott in some ways. You can see The Records live on the Midnight Special filmed with The Cars around 1979.

Wow, I'm impressed! I've been in a few bands (as a guitarist/singer) and played a handful of gigs, but beyond the obvious choices "Just What I Needed" and "You're All I've Got Tonight", nobody I played with ever wanted to play Cars songs. I've never played this song with a band. Always wanted to; it would be such a trip, as you put it. It seems to me that if the drummer lost his beat for even a second, the whole song would fall apart!

One of the earliest bands I played in, we all loved the Cars. We did "Just What I Needed", "My Best Friend's Girl" and "Shake It Up", but we also would pull out "Touch And Go", "Cruiser" or the entire "Moving In Stereo" side of the first album. After that band broke up, "Just What I Needed" and "Let's Go" were the only ones I ever played live again.

I've mostly stuck to playing originals on stage, but it'd be a dream come true to do a kick-ass "Cruiser" onstage! What a great combo: Hard-rocking guitar, intense little synth parts, and falsetto vocals. And the whole second side of "The Cars" must have been a crowd pleaser. It's a great sequence - I don't think a comparison to Side 2 of "Abbey Road" is out of line.
I never thought I'd see "All Mixed Up" performed properly on stage, but The New Cars did a VERY nice job on it.

The band that I was in the longest did a lot of originals as well, but to bring in that steady paycheck, you had to play enough songs that people would recognize. The curse of playing in public. The earlier band that did side 2 had a lot of fun with stuff onstage and was willing to take risks, but eventually broke up. I loved doing side 2 because when you get to 'Moving in Stereo' my bass part announces it.
Side 2 of Abbey Road is my favorite peace of music. I love the Beatles.

My very favoritest cars song performed brilliantly! "In your headlock on the floor, who could ever ask for more?" Such a wit. Elliot Easton rules the day! Favorite guitar solo ever.

I always thought the 4/4 beat music of the chorus was a little wink and nod on the part of Ben and Ric to their Czech/Cleveland roots. Makes me wanna polka!
