These are great photos! For a Gene Kelly fan, it's wonderful to get to see him in that famous role. One that I read he wanted desperately to do for film, but MGM would not lone him out, so it went to Sinatra. Thanks so much for sharing these treasured shots!

Really nice! Thanks for creating this!
I believe the stories were written for The New Yorker, and the set designer's first name is Jo.

Very cool, thanks for making it! I think if Gene fans could step into a time machine, this is probably where they'd go. I know I would.

Absolutely! I've often thought that this would be one of the first few places/events I'd see first! It makes me sick knowing that there is no way to see this show which made Gene famous.

A legendary show and production with a score to die for. The film tried its best but by all accounts didn't come close to the quality of the stage original. Vivienne Segal is all but forgotten today, sad, because she was a great star.

Thank you for this. Oh to see Gene Kelly dancing to these amazing Rodgers and Hart tunes. wouldn't that be something?

Reminds that the Sinatra/Hayworth film version is a complete Hollywood adulteration of the story. Songs omitted, songs that don't belong imported. A serious disservice to the harder edged stage original. Just have to hope that astute producers will rediscover what the original version was about and deliver.

Just lost June Havoc, "Gladys Bumps," on March 28, 2010. I believe that leaves Stanley Donen as the last major surviving name of the production :(

Just saw the movie for the first time. Sinatra was great, but the rest was a disappointment. It was worth it for the songs alone, however, Rogers and Hart were the greatest songwriting team in American theatre IMO.

So wonderful to see a compilations of photos of Gene in Pal Joey. Takes me closer to experiencing the performance I would most want to see. Thanks so much for putting this together!

This was so cool to see; it would have been incredible to see the actual performance on Broadway with Gene acting & dancing. The reviews were great if you read the archives. @tartanroom: Too bad that Gene was passed over for playing the Hollywood version of Pal Joey. I heard it was bureaucratic nonsense that involved his MGM contract t the time. Gene Kelly would have blew up the screen with his talent! Guess we'll never know!

Gene was the first Pal Joey. Most people, my age 69 think of the movie with Frank Sinatra, but I would have gone to see Gene on Broadway. Thanks
